Off Leash Dog Training - Get Your Dog to Walk Next to You... Without a Leash!

Author: Ty Brown

Have you ever wished you could achieve off leash dog training with your pet? If you are looking to have a trustworthy off leash dog then you are going to find this article very helpful. Training your dog to walk without a leash and next to your side is very rewarding.

In order to off leash train your dog you are first going to have to start with the right dog training tools. I recommend you have a few tools to teach your dog to walk by your side: a leather leash between 4'-6' long, a short leash about 18" long, and a training collar. There are a number of training collars from a choke chain to a pinch collar to a head halter. Each of these dog training tools have their pluses and minuses so work with the collar you feel most comfortable with.

You aren't going to find many free dog training sources online that are going to teach you how to achieve this level of control but I am going to reveal the simple way that you can off leash train your dog. Here is how you do it:

1- Train your dog to heel on leash. This may sound like a no-brainer but I can't tell you how many people want an off leash trained dog but they haven't even bothered to leash train their dog in the first place. So get to work and teach your dog to heel closely by your side without pulling you at all on the leash.

2- Once your dog understands how to heel on command now it is time to move to the next step. Have your dog heel and as you do so simply drop the leash. If your dog remains heeling, great! Praise him heavily and keep going. At any moment where he starts to stray from your side you need to quickly grab the leash, give a quick tug or two to get your dog back into position and keep going. Practice this heavily before moving on to the next step.

3- Once your dog will heel indefinitely while the leash is dragging along you can move to the next step. Take your small leash and attach it it your dog's training collar. Start heeling. You now have less ability to control your dog as the leash is now much shorter but you still have the opportunity to quickly grab the leash and control your dog back to position when he strays.

4- As your dog begins to heel perfectly with the short leash you can then move to using no leash.

If you follow these steps correctly you will off leash train your dog in no time.
